PERSONALITY IN RELATION TO ATTITUDES TOWARD PROLONGING LIFE.

MARY CAROLE CURRAN, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The quest for a deeper, more profound understanding of death is a universal concern of mankind. The literary contributions of poets and playwrights throughout human history have evidenced the relation- ship of this concern to man's attitudes toward prolonging life. Man clearly reveals in his writings his attitudes toward death, his determination to prolong life, his willingness to allow death to come naturally, or his longing to choose the time of death and hasten its coming. How man confronts and attempts to cope with death is mirrored in his literature.
