DETERMINATION OF STRUCTURAL DIFFERENCES INFLUENCING THE GROWTH OF THE RURAL OLD WEST REGION.

RONALD JOHN GUNDERSON, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Business and community leaders are often concerned with the local community base, its content, and how it might be improved through direct action. This study focuses upon one region in an attempt to highlight those differences among several communities and to determine which ones are associated with subsequent changes in their levels of growth.A region is often defined as a geographical unit extending across an area which possesses similar topographic, climate, or natural characteristics. A second type of regional distinction is one which focuses upon a node or growth centre which serves as the hub of regional activity while a surrounding area is, in many ways, related to it. As one might expect, these regional descriptions are not altogether dis- similar. Both point to some degree of economic similarity among places within each region due to the interrelationships which naturally exist in an area bounded by some common elements such as its natural resource base, location with respect to ports of transportation, and the secondary goods and service industries which are derived from the economic base.
