LEARNING PROJECTS OF ADULT EDUCATORS IN NEBRASKA POSTSECONDARY INSTITUTIONS.

DOMINIC JEROME ZANGARI, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Many adults currently view education as a lifelong experience. The notion that education is the strict province of youth and that a finished product emerges after a certain number of years has been rejected by learners who seek continually to improve the quality of their lives through the process of education. Cass Cass (1975) cites factors that have influenced the concept of lifelong learning:In part it has been sparked by the requirements of a rapidly changing society, the necessity for updating pro- fessional and vocational knowledge and skills, and the need to acquire new ones. But for many this interest also represents a basic need to escape the routine of a highly structured environment-to give vent to the unexplored capacities and interests of minds that seek refreshment and renewal through active learning. It appears that we may be on the brink of a new era in education that will transform the nation into a "learning society" (p. 14).
