Abstract

Alcohol is by far the nation's most widely abused drug. It is estimated that nine million Americans have a serious drinking problem (Cahalan & Room, 1976). Alcohol abuse has resulted in economic, medical and sociological problems. On an annual basis, absenteeism, injuries and reduced work out- put cost industry billions of dollars (Page, 1975). In general hospitals, about 20% of all admissions are due to alcoholism and its consequences; at city and municipal hospitals, the proportion has exceeded 50% (Shader, 1975).
