Abstract

From time immemorial man has unwillingly shared his crops with various pests. Early forms of insect control were often inadequate and unsatisfactory. Prior to 1945, insecticides for crop protection were expensive in a relative sense and often not very successful. Because of this, insecticides were often considered of primary use only on high value crops such as fruits or for use during an emergency outbreak of a pest (Metcalf et al. 1962).
