PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT ON SELF-CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT OF SPANISH-SPEAKING KINDERGARTEN AGE CHILDREN

RAUL GUERRERO FLORES, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

In South Texas the Mexican-American represents the largest ethnic population. Because of bilingualism (Spanish-English), many children come to school speaking Spanish (Tex-Mex), which is reinforced within the home. However, English is the predominant language for instruction. Thus, Mexican-American children have experienced minimal success, leading to low self-concepts.
