A STUDY OF AGEISM-GERONTOPHOBIA AMONG CLERGY AND LAY DELEGATES OF THE NEBRASKA DISTRICT OF THE LUTHERAN CHURCH - MISSOURI SYNOD

SHIRLEY ANN BERGMAN, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the development of ageism-gerontophobia from historical and present-day perspectives, to identify the level of knowledge of the aging process of clergy and lay delegates of the Nebraska District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, to describe the relationship between levels of knowledge of aging and educational backgrounds, and to identify the most frequent misconceptions of aging. Data for the study were collected through a face-sheet questionnaire and the Facts on Aging Quiz which assesses one's knowledge of the aging process. The sample consisted of 70 parish pastors and 118 lay delegates. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used in the statistical analysis of the sample data. Tests for significance were the t-test, ANOVA, chi-square, Pearson product-moment correlation, Spearman's rho, and Kendall's coefficient of concordance. The major findings were: (1) clergy and lay delegates revealed the same level of knowledge of aging as measured by the FAQ; (2) lay delegate scores on the FAQ increased with the number of years spent in school; (3) significant differences were found in the percentage of errors made by clergy and lay delegates for certain items of the FAQ; and (4) the rank order of misconceptions of aging held by clergy and lay delegates was similar.
