INDEPENDENT LIVING TECHNIQUES AND CONCEPTS: LEVEL OF IMPORTANCE AS PERCEIVED BY SEVERELY DISABLED INDIVIDUALS VERSUS LEVEL OF IMPORTANCE AS PERCEIVED BY PROFESSIONAL HOME ECONOMISTS

BETSY SHOFSTALL GUIOU GABB, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The signing of Rehabilitation, Comprehensive Services, and Developmental Disabilities Amendments of 1978, signified a new approach to the field of rehabilitation. As the human services system directs its focus to the needs of the individual, normalization and independent living should receive emphasis. Although there has been increased emphasis on independence and independent living by severely disabled individuals nationally, little has been done in the State of Oklahoma to identify those concepts and techniques which contribute to independent living. If home economists are to assume an integral role in the rehabilitation process, it is necessary to determine their perception of the importance of specified techniques and concepts to independent living. The purpose of this research was to identify the techniques and concepts for independent living perceived as important to severely disabled individuals and professional home economists in the State of Oklahoma. An additional intent of the study was to compare the importance of independent living techniques as perceived by the disabled individuals and as perceived by professional home economists. Those concepts found to have significantly different mean scores of importance to the two sample groups were those involving an abstract thought process. The mean scores of the professional home economists were higher than those of the severely disabled individuals. Fewer techniques were determined to have a statistically significant difference in mean scores. Significant correlations between the selected demographic variables of the severely disabled individuals and the concepts and techniques appear to center around the demographic variable of education. The results would suggest a relationship did exist between education and those concepts and techniques important to independent living for disabled individuals. The research indicates that those concepts and techniques for which disabled individuals can perceive an immediate application tend to be seen as more important to independent living. As professional home economists are involved in the independent living process, they need to be aware of the possible relationships of disabled individuals' education and their perception, and comprehension of concepts and techniques for independent living.
