FACTORS AFFECTING THE ATTENDANCE OF THE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED IN NEBRASKA PUBLIC TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGES
Abstract
This study examined the most critical factors that influence the opportunities of the economically disadvantaged students to enroll in Nebraska public technical community colleges. A number of economic and school-related variables were selected to determine their influence upon the enrollment of economically disadvantaged students in these colleges. The sources of information were printed materials from the United States Bureau of Census, the Bureau of Business Research--University of Nebraska, the Nebraska State Department of Education, the Nebraska State Department of Labor, and the Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education. Data were also obtained from financial aids officers at the six Nebraska public technical community college areas. The study assessed the relationships between the percentage of financial aid received by students enrolled in public technical community colleges and the independent demographic and economic variables. The statistical analysis was completed utilizing the Pearson Product-Moment Coefficient of Correlation and the Stepwise Multiple Regression. The resulting data revealed that: (1) When there was an increase in the state apportionment, there was an increase in the number of economically disadvantaged students receiving financial aid. (2) When there was an increase in the size of the technical community college, there was a decrease in the number of economically disadvantaged students receiving financial aid. (3) When the local tax contribution to the technical community college increased, the number of economically disadvantaged students receiving financial aid decreased. (4) With an increase in the per capita income there was a decrease in the number of economically disadvantaged students receiving financial aid. (5) When there was an increase in the unemployment rate, there was an increase in the number of economically disadvantaged students receiving financial aid. (6) With an increase in the proportion of the population enrolled in technical community colleges there was a decrease in the number of economically disadvantaged students receiving financial aid. (7) When there was an increase in tuition and fees, there was a decrease in the number of economically disadvantaged students receiving financial aid. When the tuition and fees variable was analyzed in combination with all other predictor variables, the number of economically disadvantaged students receiving financial aid increased.
