THE PERCEPTIONS OF SELECTED ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL PARENTS, TEACHERS, AND BUILDING ADMINISTRATORS TOWARD THE TEACHING OF COMPUTER LITERACY IN THE K-12 SCHOOL PROGRAM

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the perceptions of parents, teachers, and building administrators of Jefferson County School District, Colorado, toward teaching computer literacy in the elementary and secondary school program. The study compared the perceptions of "what is" and "what should be" taught in the school program regarding computer literacy. In addition, comparisons were made between the various groups of the sample, and among each group by school level. The setting for the study was Jefferson County School District, Colorado, a large suburban school district in the Denver Metropolitan Area. The definition of computer literacy used in this study was a synthesis of the most common factors found in current writings. The definition had the following three components. (1) Awareness. The understanding of the impact that computers have upon individuals and society. (2) Acquisition. The acquisition of skills necessary to function with computers in society. (3) Application. The ability to apply computers in a productive and creative manner as prescribed by the user. The study was structured as a needs assessment to secure the perceptions of parents, teachers, and building administrators. The information gathered supported the following conclusions: (1) Parents, teachers, and building administrators of Jefferson County School District believe that computer literacy and the three components of computer literacy (awareness, acquisition, and application) should be a part of the elementary and secondary school curriculum. (2) Parents of junior high school pupils felt that more should be done to teach computer literacy than parents of senior high school students. (3) Teachers at the elementary and junior high school level felt that more should be done to teach computer literacy than teachers at the senior high school level. (4) There were no differences found among building administrators regarding their perception toward teaching computer literacy to students.
