NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT: CORRELATION WITH THE ACQUISITION OF SPATIAL PERSPECTIVE-TAKING SKILLS IN CHILDREN 8 AND 12
Abstract
Children ages 8 (n = 44) and 12 (n = 46) were administered the Luria-Nebraska neuropsychological Children's Battery and a spatial perspective-taking task modified from that of Piaget and Inhelder (1956). Correlations were sought regarding children's performance on both of these measures in an attempt to further determine links in brain/behavior relationships. Significant correlations were hypothesized and found between a child's performance on the Perspective-Taking Task and those items which were thought to measure functioning in the right and left parietal/occipital areas of the brain on the Luria-Nebraska Battery. In order to establish that the relationship between the right and left parietal/occipital items, on the Luria-Nebraska, and the Perspective-Taking Task were substantially stronger than one would expect in comparing two random cognitive tests a Comparative group of items were selected which appeared to be measuring skills similar to those on the Perspective-Taking Task. Significant correlations were also obtained between the Comparative items and the Perspective-Taking Task. Neither the right parietal/occipital or left parietal/occipital coefficients were significantly greater than the Comparative coefficients. Developmental trends were examined with respect to the Perspective-Taking Task and the Luria-Nebraska Battery. A significant difference in performance was noted between the younger and older children on the Perspective-Taking Task. A significant difference in performance was also found between the younger and older children on five of the eleven Luria-Nebraska scales although this was not anticipated due to the age-corrected scoring methods. This was apparently due to the large number of items on these particular scales which are not adjusted for age. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed specific to the perspective-taking literature and neuropsychological development. Goals for future research in this area are also presented.
