STUDIES IN THERMOCHEMISTRY: ENTHALPY OF REACTION OF GASEOUS CHLORINE WITH AQUEOUS IODIDE ION; THE STANDARD ENTHALPIES OF FORMATION OF AQUEOUS AND GASEOUS HYDROGEN IODIDE

MERTON EDMUND HAROLD SPRENGEL, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The enthalpy of formation of HI(aq) has been reevaluated. A survey of the literature provided a number of somewhat discordant values determined from data based on gas-phase equilibria, e.m.f. measurements and calorimetric studies over an 80-year period. These earlier studies were reviewed, and where possible, the data was corrected and recalculated using the most recent, dependable data available. In this study, the enthalpy of the reaction of Cl(,2)(g) with HI(aq), and the enthalpies of mixing of HCl(aq) with (I(,2) + HI) solutions were measured by solution calorimetry at 298.15 K. Results of these determinations were combined with auxiliary data from the literature to yield (DELTA)H(,f)('0)(I('-),aq,298.15 K) = -(13532 (+OR-) 33) calories per mole. From consideration of all of the values from all sources, recommended values are: (DELTA)H(,f)('0)(I('-),aq,298.15 K) = -(13564 (+OR-) 17) calories per mole; (DELTA)H(,f)('0)(HI,g,298.15 K) = (6334 (+OR-) 17) calories per mole. A manuscript describing this work has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics.
