NAMESAKE. (ORIGINAL PROSE/POETRY WORK)

JULIA ANN BARDENS, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

NAMESAKE is a work in three parts which examines in poetry and prose the life of one woman in relationship to her mother and others. Through her writing, the woman, named Jane, sets out on a journey of self-discovery which carries her through letters, dreams, memories, and poems on a quest for mother/God/self/home. Prominent themes include Jane's blindness of eye and heart, her feeling of being abandoned by her mother, and her need to heal herself. As Jane grows, her writing grows. The work begins in confusion and panic and ends with a long, triumphant poem.
