NEEDS ASSESSMENTS IN ROMAN CATHOLIC ADULT EDUCATION

ROBIN D ANDERSON, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Purpose of the study was to identify needs assessment methods used by Catholic adult educators. Vatican II directed Catholic Bishops to provide educational programs for all people. Diocesan adult educators responded by planning programs on identified program and instructional needs. Surveys, including fourteen needs assessment methods identified in the literature and community, service and message programs from 59 dioceses, were mailed to 105 diocesan offices. Responses indicated methods used, method's usefulness, and use by program area. Eighty-one surveys (77%) were returned. Personal Feeling of Director and Review of Prior Program Offerings (89%) were most frequently used. Interview of Target Population (mean ranking 3.2) was perceived as most useful. Observation by Director (16%) was most used by program area. Conclusions were: (1) Review type methods were most used; (2) Inquiry type methods were most useful; (3) Program planners use review type methods to conserve resources but use inquiry methods to identify instructional needs; (4) Directors rely heavily on personal feelings and observations. Recommendations were: (1) Directors must become acquainted with key leaders; (2) Methods relating closely to interview of target population should be used, and (3) Needs should follow from mission of the Church.
