GENETIC VARIATION AND SELECTION RESPONSE IN FATTY ACID COMPOSITION AND PERCENT OIL IN TWO POPULATIONS OF CORN (HERITABILITY, SELECTION)

Abstract

Two experiments were conducted in this study. One was a selection experiment using 89 full-sib families from Nebraska B synthetic (NB) x Nebraska Krug improved population (NK) which were tested in one year and one location. Results of this experiment showed considerable genetic variability for yield, palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids, total unsaturated fatty acids, percent oil, 50% flowering, and ear height. Yield was positively correlated with total oil per ha, total linoleic acid per ha, total unsaturated fatty acid per ha, and ear height. Percent oil was positively correlated with oleic acid and negatively correlated with linoleic acid. The correlation between linoleic and oleic acid was negative. The second experiment was designed to evaluate and compare selection response under Reciprocal Full-sib Selection (RFS) and S(,1) line per se selection in both populations. The results showed that both RFS and S(,1) line per se gave good response to selection for the three selection criteria independently applied; linoleic acid, total unsaturated fatty acids, and percent oil. Although not always significant, S(,1) line per se gave greater response than RFS. Expected gains through both selection methods were lower than the actual ones. The realized heritabilities of the selected traits were all high. Studies of correlated responses showed that, in the NB population no reduction in grain yield was found to result from selection for high linoleic acid, total unsaturated fatty acids or percent oil. However, selection for high total unsaturated fatty acids in the NK population reduced yield. Except for selection for high total unsaturated fatty acids and high oil using RFS, the results in NK followed similar patterns to those of the NB population. For most traits no genetic drift was obtained by taking random samples of 2 sets of 10 lines in either the NB or the NK population.
