JOB MOTIVATIONAL FACTORS OF EDUCATORS WITHIN ADULT CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS FROM VARIOUS STATES
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between personal characteristics and the job motivation of educators who teach in selected state adult correctional institutions in the United States. It attempted to answer the following questions: (1) What are the personal characteristics of certified educators who teach in selected state adult correctional institutions. (2) What factors seem to motivate such educators in the work setting as measured by the Educational Work Components Study (EWCS)? (3) What are the relationships between the background characteristics of the educators and their motivation based upon (a) potential for personal challenge and development, (b) competitiveness, (c) tolerance for work pressure, (d) security, (e) Willingness to Seek Reward in Spite of Uncertainty vs. Avoidance, and (f) surroundings.? (4) What are the relationships between the perceptions of job mobility of correctional educators and their motivation based upon (a) potential for personal challenge and development, (b) competitiveness, (c) tolerance for work pressure, (d) security, (e) Willingness to Seek Reward in Spite of Uncertainty vs. Avoidance, and (f) surroundings. A survey of 331 correctional educators in adult correctional institutions in thirty-five states provided the data for this study. Information solicited from the educators included (1) demographic information such as sex and years of experience, (2) institutional information such as size and security, (3) program information such as probationary period, teacher involvement in student selection and program delivery systems, (4) job mobility indicators, and (5) responses to the items from the EWCS as indication of motivation. Some of the findings indicated (1) significance between male correctional educators and Factor 3, Willingness to Seek Reward in Spite of Uncertainty vs. Avoidance; (2) significance of those correctional educators who had seriously considered leaving their jobs with Factor 3, Willingness to Seek Reward in Spite of Uncertainty vs. Avoidance; and (3) those correctional educators who had made an inquiry or actually had applied for another position with Factor 3, Willingness to Seek Reward in Spite of Uncertainty vs. Avoidance.
