SELF-PERCEIVED CONTINUING EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF ALUMNI PASTORS OF GRACE COLLEGE OF THE BIBLE AND OTHER PASTORS IN EASTERN NEBRASKA AND WESTERN IOWA (CLERGY, RELIGIOUS)

RUSSELL G JONES, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The Problem. The purpose of this study was to investigate the continuing education needs and interests of alumni pastors of Grace College of the Bible (GCB) and other constituent pastors of eastern Nebraska-western Iowa. Questions asked were: (1) What are their self-perceived continuing education needs? (2) What educational experiences were pursued during the past five years? (3) What delivery systems would be preferred and most effective? (4) Would GCB, be able to plan and provide programs to meet disovered needs? (5) Would the method of delivery affect the response to or the utilization of the educational opportunities provided? (6) Did demographics and denominational-church support affect the realization of those educational needs? The Procedure. The six page questionnaire used to collect the data was sent to a random sample of 88 alumni and 154 non-alumni pastors. Sixty-two instruments were returned by alumni and sixty by non-alumni pastors for a total of 122 or 50 percent. The Findings. A total of 63.1 percent had participated in additional education. The 36-45 age group showed the highest participation. The typical pastor had been in the pastorate 6-10 years and was serving his second or third church. The experience was largely professional in nature and occurred most often on a college campus or at a church retreat. A factor encouraging participation was denominational affiliation. Negative factors were lack of appropriate courses followed by heavy home and church responsibilities. Preference of delivery systems showed seminars first followed by formal classes and correspondence study. Interest in continuing education at GCB was indicated by thirteen percent with an additional forty-nine percent saying perhaps they would take work. Recommendations. A commitment should be made by GCB to develop and support continuing education opportunities for pastors.
