JAMES STETSON METCALFE'S SIGNED CRITICISM OF THE LEGITIMATE THEATRE IN NEW YORK CITY: 1888-1927
Abstract
This five-chapter study examines the career and writings of James Stetson Metcalfe (1858-1927), who was the drama critic and editor for old Life magazine from March 1888 to May 1920, Judge magazine from October 1920 to April 1921, and The Wall Street Journal from December 1922 until his death in May 1927. Chapter 1 sketches Metcalfe's biography and details his career as a professional journalist and drama critic. Chapter 2 traces the evolution of his critical methodology. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 illustrate the critic's practical application of that methodology to New York City's "legitimate" theatre. The study concludes that Metcalfe was a successful popular journalist who produced a body of legitimate theatre criticism which, while it does not commend itself to posterity, nevertheless possesses a certain historical value as a reflector of the American theatre in a period of transition.
