THE INFLUENCE OF SELECTED DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES AS PREDICTORS OF ANDRAGOGICAL TENDENCY IN THE COMPUTER INSTRUCTORS IN THE COMMUNITY COLLEGES OF OREGON (EDUCATIONAL ORIENTATION, LEARNER-CENTERED, SUBJECT-ORIENTED, GRUBBS, HADLEY)

JULIA A JANTZI, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The central purpose of this study was to determine the degree to which selected demographic variables predicted the educational orientation tendency of community college instructors in Oregon. A result of the study, was an increased understanding of community college computer instructors with relationship to their demographic backgrounds as well as their educational orientation. Demographic variables to be studied were selected if they had been identified, in earlier studies, as significant predictors of educational orientation in adult educators. The factors identified were sex, age, level of schooling completed, formal professional preparation, instructional experience and faculty status. The instrument used to measure the orientation was a modified version of Hadley's (1975) Educational Orientation Questionnaire (EOQ). The modified version used in this research was drawn from the Grubbs (1981) study. This instrument was selected over the Hadley version because of the criticism found in the literature. Demographic information about the community college instructors was collected by items which were added to the survey instrument under the guidance of the Survey Research Center at Oregon State University. Two hundred forty seven full-time and part-time computer instructors were identified with assistance from the offices of the fifteen community college presidents. These instructors were contacted using the method described by Dillman (1983). One hundred eighty one (73%) persons responded. An important contribution made by this study was the documentation of demographic information pertaining to computer instructors in community colleges in Oregon while a preliminary analysis of the data suggested that certain factors were significantly related at the .001 and .05 levels to the educational orientation questionnaire scores. However, the regression analysis yielded a small R squared (16%) and patterned residuals, therefore, these factors were not considered to be good predictors of the educational orientation questionnaire scores for computer instructors in the community colleges of Oregon.
