THE DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF A DIAGNOSTIC, COMPETENCY-BASED TEST FOR CONFIRMATION CLASSES PERTAINING TO CREATION IN THE LUTHERAN CHURCH IN AMERICA, NEBRASKA SYNOD

GARY ALBERT CARLSON, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The principal purpose of this study was to develop a test to measure whether or not the goals of the Lutheran Church in America were being taught in the Lutheran Church in America's confirmation units on creation. This project consisted of three phases: (1) Identification of confirmation creation goals; (2) Development of Confirmation Creation Test; and (3) Validation of the Confirmation Creation Test. The study began with the identification of confirmation goals on creation. Current confirmation material was reviewed for goals and prominent persons were interviewed. The identified list of goals was submitted to a jury of experts to select the most appropriate goals. The test development began with the development of test specifications for each objective. Three competency-based test items were written for each of the goals. The jury of experts evaluated each of the items for appropriateness and determined which items should be used. The test form was pilot tested on population samples of eighty-three students that had not received confirmation creation instruction and ninety-nine that had received confirmation creation instruction. All students were from the Lutheran Church in America, Nebraska Synod. The validation of the Confirmation Creation Test involved an analysis of item quality, item difficulty, reliability, readability, and content validity. Approximately ninety percent of the items on the test were found to be within acceptable limits of item quality. Item difficulty, reliability, readability, and content validity all fell within the range of acceptable criterions. Further refinements were suggested for items not meeting guidelines. The reliability of the Confirmation Creation Test was determined by the use of K-R 20 formula. The reliability estimates were found to be within acceptable limits for a diagnostic, criterion-referenced test. A test manual was developed which contained a list of the competencies, a table which identified the competency on which each item was based, answer keys, and instructions for administration of the test forms.
