HOUSEHOLD CONSUMPTION PATTERNS OF BEEF PRODUCTS: A DISAGGREGATED CROSS-SECTIONAL ANALYSIS

FAHAD NASSER MULHIM, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The aim of the present study was the estimation of the consumption parameters for six beef products, using data from the 1977-78 Nationwide Food Consumption Survey. These parameters provide a basis for computing expenditure, quantity (income), quality, and household size elasticities. Parameters of Engel curves were derived by OLS, GLS, and ML-Tobit. The effects of partitioning the sample by regional and urbanizational location of households were also investigated. To provide some evidence on the importance of truncation bias, asymptotically efficient estimates of Engel parameters were obtained through ML-Tobit; these estimates were compared and contrasted to the traditional ordinary least-squares as well as to the generalized least-squares estimates. The ML-Tobit results are then used to make predictions of household consumption of various beef products, given information on household income and size. Implications of the results for the beef industry were explored.
