A SURVEY OF VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE INSTRUCTORS' ATTITUDES REGARDING THE MAINSTREAMING OF HANDICAPPED STUDENTS

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the attitudes of vocational agriculture instructors in a six-state area regarding the mainstreaming of handicapped students into a regular vocational classroom. In addition, the level of teacher preparation as it related to the vocational agriculture teachers' attitudes was investigated. The population selected for the study consisted of vocational agriculture instructors within the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The survey instrument used in the study collected information regarding the respondents' school systems, attitudes toward mainstreaming and teaching handicapped students, data about the level of education of the respondents, and resources available to the handicapped in the respondents' schools. The major findings were: (1) The majority of the respondents taught in secondary schools and class size ranged from one to 60 students. (2) The majority of the respondents believed they had an average level of success in working with handicapped students and 48 percent of the respondents felt they had an average level of support from their administrators. (3) Over half of the respondents had received no instruction with the last five years in working with handicapped students in the regular vocational classroom. (4) There was no significant difference in the attitudes of the vocational agriculture instructors toward teaching the mainstreamed within the regular vocational classroom. (5) Rural respondents had a significantly more positive attitude toward handicapped students than respondents from urban and suburban areas. (6) Over one-half of the respondents stated a resource room, tutors, aides, and reading specialists were available sources to assist the handicapped students in their schools. (7) There was a significant relationship in the way the respondents perceived the level of success with handicapped students and their attitudes toward mainstreamed handicapped students.
