AN INDEX TO AND BIBLIOGRAPHY OF REMINISCENCES IN THE NEBRASKA STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY LIBRARY
Abstract
Reminiscences, first-hand accounts of personal experiences related some time after, are insufficiently used by researchers primarily because most are either not published or are published in ways that do not make them accessible. The Introduction to this work discusses the literary archetype of the pioneer reminiscence. The index and analytical bibliography identifies 4,639 reminiscences in the Nebraska State Historical Society library in four parts. The main entries organize the reminiscences alphabetically by author and show at a glance those people, locales, chronological foci, and subjects discussed in each. Three indices follow the main entries: a proper noun index, a subject index, and a chronological index. The proper noun index includes towns, entities like the Union Pacific Railroad, and single occurrences like Wounded Knee as well as people. The subject index contains groups of people by ethnic allegiance or church or fraternal association as well as counties and professions. The chronological index lists by decades the times in which the reminiscences occurred. The bibliography includes all sources, published and unpublished, which yielded the reminiscences.
