PERSONALITY PRIORITIES OF ADOLESCENTS: A REGRESSION ANALYSIS OF PREDICTOR VARIABLES (ADLERIAN, ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION)

THEODORE JAMES DELAET, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Significant predictor variables for the personality priorities of adolescents, as measured by the Personality Priorities Inventory for Adolescents (PPIA), were determined for 206 secondary school students. The predictor variables evaluated: Academic Achievement, Birth Order, Activity Involvement, and Ability Grouping (Gifted, Average, or Special Education), were chosen from a review of Adlerian theory, Nira Kefir's (1971, 1982) Personality Priorities theory, and Achievement Motivation theory. A forward entry multiple regression analysis for each of the four factors measured by the PPIA resulted in all of the predictor variables except ability grouping significantly predicting at least one of the four factors. Academic achievement was the only variable to be included in all four regression equations. Student self-reported personality priorities and teacher reports of student personality priorities were compared as a check of the reliability of using student self-reports. Teacher reports and student self-reports of personality priorities did not differ significantly. Findings include establishment of the anticipated relationship between Personality Priorities theory and Adlerian theory. Both theories, for the first time, were linked to Achievement Motivation theory. A modified model of adolescent personality priorities theory is presented. Implications of the present study for future research and limitations of the study are presented.
