AN EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVE CROPS IN WESTERN NEBRASKA AND A CHARACTERIZATION OF SELECTED EARLY MATURING SORGHUM LINES

STANLEY PLETT, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Nine crops were compared under two management systems in the years 1984 to 1986. Early maturing sorghums from three different origins were evaluated in 1986 at three locations using both the lines as such and F1 progenies from crosses to three different female lines. The analysis of variance for crop comparisons indicated that year effects were larger than location effects for all crops tested. Significant differences between crops were found for net returns and total digestible nutrients when grown on black fallow (cultivated and fallow for 20 months) but not on ecofallow (no-till fallow for 8 months). Rankings between ecofallow and black fallow generally were the same. Soil water at planting time appeared to be the major contributor to yield differences. Significant differences between origins of selection for all traits were found at some but not all locations tested. Maximum and minimum values for any trait at one location were similar for all origins of selection. Significant phenotypic correlations were generally the same for all origins of early maturing sorghums. Genetic correlations were generally the same direction as phenotypic correlations except for between days to 50% bloom and yield which was positive for Mead originating lines and negative for Sidney and Oregon origins. Predicted and correlated response to selection varied for location of testing and origin of lines. For maximum yield improvement both the intended environment and the material to be improved must be taken into account.
