Variables influencing leadership development among presidents of selected nursing organizations

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify variables contributing to leadership development of individuals who were presidents of state nurses' associations and chapters of Sigma Theta Tau. It was operationally defined that leaders were individuals who had assumed the presidency of those organizations. A questionnaire returned by 207 respondents was used to gather data and interviews were also conducted with four national nurse leaders. The variables considered as part of fulfilling the purpose of the research study included: personal and professional characteristics of the identified individuals; impact of family members regarding leadership development of the identified leaders; extent of organizational involvement of the identified presidents; and support systems utilized by the identified individuals. The findings included but were not limited to the following description of the "typical" nurse leader as: female, first born, having supportive parents who would be high school graduates and who had been married and living together until the individual was at least 27; graduate of a baccalaureate as well as a master's program in nursing with above a 3.0 grade point average and planning to obtain additional degrees; having at least 11 years of nursing experience; being a member and officer of at least two nursing organizations as well as two other non-nursing organizations; resembling both parents, but the father more than the mother with regard to personality and temperament; recalling that her mother was the stronger partner in her parents' marriage; having self-expectations of combining marriage and child rearing with a leadership position; involved in organizations during high school and college and a member of the National Student Nurses' Association; having a female nurse as a mentor; receiving most encouragement for professional achievement from her professional colleagues.
