Educational wants regarding family caregiving of women in Nebraska Cooperative Extension Clubs

Elaine Joan Matthis, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Implications for educational programming were delineated based on an examination of educational wants regarding family caregiving for disabled adults of women in Nebraska Cooperative Extension Clubs. An instrument to elicit data regarding educational wants, concerning the family caregiving tasks documented by Clark and Rakowski (1983), was developed and tested. Data from 441 members of 47 randomly selected clubs were included in the study. Participants' perceptions of the importance of learning about the common family caregiving tasks were measured. Analysis of variance procedures were employed to examine differences among the mean importance scores of (a) age groups and (b) caregiving status groups (future caregivers, current caregivers, and noncaregivers). Caregiving status was found to be a definitive indicator of desire to learn about tasks of family caregiving for disabled adults. The target group identified as most appropriate for educational programming concerning family caregiving for disabled adults was a combination of future and current caregivers. The mean importance scores on the caregiving tasks by future caregivers were slightly higher, but not significantly different, than the scores by current caregivers. Mean importance scores by noncaregivers were lower and significantly different from those of both current and future caregivers. Differences among age groups were less definitive than those among caregiving status groups. Thirty topics appropriate for educational programs for current and future caregivers were identified. This study only examined participants' perceptions of how important it was to learn about 45 caregiving tasks documented by Clark and Rakowski (1983). Further research is recommended to determine other topics of importance to future and current caregivers.
