Nutrient composition, metabolizable energy values and nutritive value of selected sorghum grain varieties and yellow corn in broiler diets

Abstract

Three commercial low tannin sorghum (LTS) grain varieties (Pioneer 8333, NC+ 271, Dekalb 42Y) and one commercial high tannin (HTS) variety (Dekalb BR-64) were grown at the same location in 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988. Average crude protein content, on a dry matter basis of all sorghum varieties in the crop years 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988 were: 10.6, 8.6, 10.7 and 10.0%, respectively. An increase in crude protein of sorghum did not result in a proportional increase in amino acid content when expressed as percentage of crude protein. Metabolizable energy (MEn) of LTS (3,200 kcal/kg) was not different from corn (3,385 kcal/kg). However, MEn of the HTS (2,860 kcal/kg) was lower (P $<$.05) than corn and the LTS.

Two experiments were conducted to compare the nutritive value of corn, LTS and HTS in isocaloric and isonitrogenous broiler diets. The NRC MEn value of 3,212 kcal/kg for LTS and HTS was used to formulate the diets. Results indicated that broilers fed HTS at either 21 or 23% protein gained less (P $<$.04) weight and had poorer (P $<$.002) feed conversion (FC) than broilers fed corn and LTS. There were no differences in body weight gain (BWG) (P $>$.16) and FC (P $>$.1) of broilers fed LTS and corn. In two subsequent experiments additional energy as animal fat improved BWG and FC of broilers fed HTS. Experiments 5 and 6 were conducted to determine the effect of grain source, form and pelleting on BWG and FC of broilers. No interactions (P $>$.11) between grain sources and grain forms, or grain sources and feed forms were observed for BWG and FC. Rolling grains decreased BWG (P $<$.02) and FC (P $<$.05) whereas pelleting the complete diets improved BWG (P $<$.0001) and FC (P $<$.0001) regardless of grain sourca1548HBWG and FC of birds fed corn and LTS were not different (P $>$.27), but both were decreased (P $<$.05) in birds fed HTS. Pelleting did not decrease assayable tannin in HTS.
