La focalizacion inconsciente en "Pedro Paramo"

Jose Trinidad Espinosa-Jacome, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

In narrative fiction the unconscious content comes to the fore continuously throughout the work. Each discourse implies the existence of two inherent qualities: (1) the capability of achieving the reappearance of the repressed in a subtle manifestation; (2) the capability of actualizing the sublimation of instincts through an outpour of aesthetic technique. In this study we propose to make evident the materialization of the unconscious in Juan Rulfo's novel Pedro Paramo, with the object of obtaining a comprehension (A) of its structure; and (B) of four of the important characters: Pedro Paramo, Miguel Paramo, Susana San Juan, and Juan Preciado. Of these, Pedro Paramo is of the greatest interest to us in view of his role as protagonist and on account of the manner in which he is characterized. We propose to detect how power is manifested in Pedro Paramo according to the Freudian theory which affirms that the power principle has its roots in the conquest of fire. We shall explain that Pedro Paramo possesses an anal character and that Susana San Juan becomes chanalized in insanity as the victim of incest, as is demonstrated by her typically oneirically structured fantasies. We shall attempt to demonstrate that Miguel Paramo died the 22nd of October and that he possessed strong suicidal tendencies in a manner similar to his father as well as his mother (supposedly Eduviges Dyada). Finally we take a look at the unconscious focalization in Juan Preciado in order to account for his loss of breath as a form of castration, resolved optimistically in the duality represented by life after death. The study of unconscious focalization in Pedro Paramo posits the objective of detecting the most salient moments in the novelistic discourse of Rulfo, in which there appears the repressed. Thus we attempt to make clear certain passages which at times would appear as impenetrable owing to their oneiric structure.
