Secondary school resource units for literary study of two women Plains writers and certain of their works

Marna Hart Hawkins, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

This dissertation describes the development of secondary school resource units for literary study focused on two noted women Plains writers, Bess Streeter Aldrich and Mari Sandoz, and certain of their works. A unit featuring Aldrich is presented for study in grades 7 and 8, and a unit featuring Sandoz is presented for study in grades 9 and 10. Each unit includes the following: statement of philosophy, purposes, and objectives; statement of setting, including scope; suggested group and individual student activities; and, to accompany these activities, a students' bibliography; selected listing of audiovisual materials and of area and community resources appropriate for field trips, etc.; suggested bulletin board and wall display materials; and ideas for evaluation. In addition, each unit provides an initial overview of the unit and instructions for its use; "Leads to Other Units" section; and teacher's bibliography. An appendix containing a general bibliography of printed resource materials; selected listings of audiovisual materials and of area and community resources in Nebraska, appropriate for field trips, etc.; and listings suggesting bulletin board and wall display materials and evaluation resources is also included. Approximately 125 student learning activities are suggested in the two resource units, which, along with their appendix, comprise Chapter IV of this study. The four major phases in the development of these literary resource units included selection of writers and a survey of needs and interests; selection and grading of works; actual development of the units; and a formative evaluation of the units. To determine teacher and student need for and interest in the development of instructional materials on the focal authors, 100 randomly selected Nebraska secondary English teachers were surveyed. The study also involved examination of literature about curriculum resource units, Plains pioneer studies, and adolescent literature study as they related to the English curriculum.
