Observational measurement of home visit behavior for psychiatric populations

Patricia Huse McVeigh, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The Behavior-At-Home-Scale is an ongoing assessment of pervasively disordered psychiatric patients in the context of the home environment. A review of the literature regarding families of these individuals depicts the burden that these families face in dealing with a variety of behavior constellations. The behaviors that the families are predominantly concerned with are incorporated into the Behavior-At-Home Scale. The behavior assessment literature suggests that although the naturalistic setting of the home environment is a useful context for evaluation, there are limitations to the generalizability of such an assessment. This investigation addresses the structural properties as well as the reliability and validity of the Behavior-At-Home Scale. While an eight factor model, based on thirty-two of the original thirty-four items was found to have merit as a measure, a four factor model based on twenty-three items was found to have slightly better measurement properties with the added benefit of being a more succinct measure. Reliability was found to be adequate for test-retest and inter-rater reliability. The validity of the instrument was assessed by using the NOSIE-30. Validity as assessed by this instrument was adequate. Recidivism data based on twenty subjects suggests that the four factor model is a better predictor, although most analyses were nonsignificant. Inconclusive results were obtained in a validational investigation using the Strachan Family Questionnaire as an adequate sample size was not available.
