Perceptions of elementary school teachers regarding the preferred leadership qualities of elementary school principals

William Allen Schernikau, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the perceptions of elementary school teachers regarding the preferred leadership qualities of elementary school principals. The seven areas of professional responsibilities of the principal that were analyzed were management skills, staff relations, community relations, personal characteristics, professional responsibilities, student relations, and curriculum program. The study was designed as a follow-up of Campbell's (1964) research. The instrument, "Teacher Perceptions of the Leadership Qualities of an Elementary School Principal," developed by the researcher, was utilized to measure the teachers' views of the qualities they most preferred in their immediate supervisor. The sample included 200 public elementary school teachers within school districts in Nebraska. The results of this survey were utilized to determine if the expectations of elementary school teachers in the 1990s concerning their principals' leadership skills had significantly changed from the expectations of their colleagues in a 1964 survey utilized in a dissertation at the University of Southern California by Ward Campbell. A review of the literature was undertaken to establish a background of information relating to the preferred leadership characteristics of elementary school principals during each specified decade as summarized in the descriptive narration.
