The effect of the number of repetitions on isokinetic strength and endurance at the knee and shoulder joints

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of varying the number of repetitions per set of isokinetic velocity spectrum training on muscular strength and endurance, and to determine the efficacy of velocity spectrum training of the knee and shoulder joints. Thirty-one untrained college-aged males completed testing and training. The subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups. The subjects in the 5 REP Group (n = 13) performed five repetitions per set of isokinetic arm internal/external rotation and leg extension/flexion three times weekly for eight weeks at the following velocities: 60, 120, 180, 240, and 300 degrees per second. Subjects in the 10 REP Group (n = 8) underwent the same training, but performed ten repetitions per set. Subjects in the Control Group (n = 10) did not participate in any isokinetic training, but were normally active. After an initial familiarization session, all subjects were tested for muscular strength and endurance of arm rotation and leg extension and flexion. At the completion of the training interval these tests were repeated. For arm rotation, five repetitions was superior to ten repetitions per set in terms of eliciting strength improvement. For leg flexion and extension strength, five and ten repetitions per set were equally effective in terms of eliciting a training response. Strength improvements occurred at every velocity for leg flexion, with improvement in strength in leg at all velocities except 300 degrees per second. A cross training effect was observed for leg flexion and extension. Neither five nor ten repetitions per set was effective in improving muscular endurance for any of the muscle groups.
