Adult vocational needs in Saudi Arabian adult education as perceived by Saudi students in the United States and educators and trainers in Saudi Arabia
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine adult vocational needs in Saudi Arabia as perceived by Saudi students in the United States. Selected literature regarding adult vocational education policies and practices in the United States and in a number of developing countries was reviewed to give direction to the study. The data used in this study were collected through a questionnaire piloted with Saudi students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and then randomly distributed to Saudi students in the United States. The instrument, accompanied by a letter in Arabic, was sent to the respondents. The instrument was directed toward Saudi students' perceptions of present vocational education needs in Saudi Arabia and the degree to which those needs are being met. Selected relevant occupations were included in each category of needs. The respondents were asked to rate on a Likert scale the degree to which they considered each need important and to what degree they considered it was being met in current Saudi adult education programs. Saudi students in the United States rated the importance of meeting needs significantly higher than the degree to which they are presently being met in Saudi adult education programs in each area addressed by the questionnaire except homemaking. Saudi students, who are overwhelmingly males, reported that homemaking needs are less significant than the other needs, because they apparently thought that homemaking needs are not significant to male learners. However, this kind of education is provided to female learners in their own separate schools. Saudi students also reported that reading and writing needs are less significant than the other needs, probably because Saudi adult education is currently addressed exclusively to the eradication of illiteracy. Interviews with experienced Saudi adult educators generally confirmed the judgments of Saudi students in the United States.
