Wunderkinder Lieder: A study of the songs of Erich Wolfgang Korngold
Abstract
This dissertation consists of a biographical sketch of the life of Erich Wolfgang Korngold which is translated from German and summarized by Randel R. Wagner from the book Erich Wolfgang Korngold by Luzi Korngold, published in 1967 by Elisabeth Lafite Verlag, Vienna, and a detailed analysis of the Lieder of Erich Korngold--the thirty-seven songs outside his opera and film scores. The songs of Erich Korngold span the years 1911 to 1952 and consist of six songs for soprano and orchestra or piano (Einfache Lieder, Opus 9), four songs (Lieder des Abschieds, Opus 14), three songs (Drei Gesange, Opus 18), three songs for soprano (Drei Lieder fur Sopran und Klavier, Opus 22), a song cycle (Die Unverganglichkeit, Opus 27), four songs (Songs of the Clown, Opus 29), Four Shakespeare Songs, Opus 31, Funf Lieder, Opus 38, and Sonett fur Wien, Opus 41. The songs are discussed in chronological order of their date of publication, and a separate chapter is devoted to each Opus number. Each chapter begins with general remarks about the particular collection being discussed followed by an individual analysis of each piece beginning with the poetry and translation, if appropriate, and concluding with a discussion of relevant musical considerations such as structure, word and mood painting, style and specific ways in which Korngold uses his musical resources. This study closes with a chapter of summary and conclusion which is followed by four appendices which include a tribute to Erich Korngold by Bruno Walter, a cartoon about Korngold the "Wunderkind" from Neues Wiener Tagblatt, Circa 1911, a sample of Korngold's autograph manuscript, biographical information on lesser known poets whose work is featured in the Lieder of Erich Korngold and a selected bibliography.
