A test of time-based strategy and its relationship with generic strategy, the environment and performance

Bradley Wade Wagner, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

This research investigated the consequences of business level strategies in various environmental contexts. The prime focus was time-based strategy, which has recently been a topic of growing interest and importance. As an independent dimension of competitive strategy, time based strategies may allow choices between previously inconsistent strategic initiatives. This proposition was tested with data from organizations in five different industries. The varied industry context also served to determine the generalizable impact that environmental velocity has on time-based strategy. Three important relationships were investigated: (1) how time-based strategy affects generic strategy choices; (2) the performance implications of competitive strategies; and (3) the impact that the environment has on the strategy-performance relationship. The research results relate to a number of questions of current interest in the field of strategic management. First, time-based strategy was not found to be associated with the pursuit of multiple generic strategies. Second, typical generic strategies did not add explanatory power to organizational performance. Third, time-based strategy was found to significantly contribute to the explanation of organizational performance. This significance was both statistical and meaningful. Finally, results indicate that the effectiveness of time-based strategy was not related to the speed at which industry events take place.
