The strategic role of quality in the implementation of World-Class Manufacturing

Myung Hoon Lee, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

This dissertation investigates the representation and implementation of contemporary manufacturing concepts by U.S. manufacturers. Manufacturing dependent not only on the management of technology but also upon success is the behavioral and structural changes undertaken to exploit the potential of technology. The understanding of World-Class Manufacturing (WCM) and its vertical structure, quality practices, Just-in-Time (JIT) and Computer-integrated Manufacturing (CIM) and their interconnection, have implications for various dimensions of manufacturing operations: quality, creativity, flexibility, and productivity. In addition, rapid response to market demand necessitates creating and sustaining a learning culture within an organization. Thus, characteristics of the interaction process, which often constitute multiple and sometimes complex dimensions, need to be investigated. Data were gathered from 167 U.S. quality managers. The relationships between quality practices, perceived benefits and performance measures were tested. Research findings substantiate the following: (1) The implementation of alternative quality practices, to varying degree, lead to increased behavioral benefits, as well as, actual performance improvement; (2) Each of the quality practices considered provides at least some of the benefits expected, but, not all quality practices are believed by quality managers to provide all of the benefits suggested by the literature; and (3) Each of the quality practices can provide improvements in performance and should be considered for specific needs of organization, but none of the practices are all encompassing and therefore cannot be successful without the benefits provided by using them in conjunction with one or more of the other practices.
