Bitterroot. (Original writing);

Jerry Lee Nelson, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The novella traces three generations of a family on the plains of western Kansas. Stirred by the sale of the Weismann land, the narrator, a friend of the family, describes major events in the Weismann family history from the 1880s to the present. By examining the Weismann family's struggles through drought, economic depression and war, the narrator comes to understand the harshness of the arid High Plains and the courage of the people who live there.
