Grafiti escritos: un intertexto significativo en las obras de ficción más representativas de autores Hispanoamericanos contemporáneos

Abstract

The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate how contemporary Spanish American Literature presents within its multiple realities a new reality: the graffiti intertext. For the definition of the intertext concept I have explored and focused on the idea of intertextuallity as an illustration of codes, formulas and segments of the social language, as well as the application of secret clues and ideological fragments that always transcend the anecdotal level. The text as an intertext (Roland Barthes) and the text as an absorption of texts (Julia Kristeva) are fundamental principles in current literary criticism. These principles form the theoretical frame of my dissertation. The authors studied belong to the well known period of aesthetic renovation in Spanish American Literature called "The Boom" whose chronology spans thirty-three years (1959-92). The First Chapter discusses a few general antecedents of graffiti texts expressed through rudimentary forms located in the Magdaleniense Period, and continuing with the caves at Aurignac, Lascaux and Altamira; this is followed by some Medieval, Renaissance and contemporary observations in which we include the Kilroy phenomenon, the Vietnam War and the Sahara Desert. Later on we point out a few literary antecedents such as The Bible, Orlando Furioso, Don Quixote, El Lazarillo de ciegos y caminantes, "Las cuatro PPPP de Lima", Sodoma y Gomorra, Tirano Banderas, and Santuario. I close this chapter by showing pictorial antecedents such as The Duchamp case, Picasso and Dubuffet, as well as some works of cinematography: Brassai "The Broken Silence" and "El Norte". The Second Chapter develops the idea of the graffiti intertext already consolidated as an aesthetics category and applied to the complete works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jose Emilio Pacheco, Severo Sarduy, Julio Cortazar, Jose Donoso and Manuel Puig. I conclude that the graffiti intertext is a significant creative device in contemporary Spanish American Literature, with Gabriel Garcia Marquez as the pioneer and master in the fictional use of graffiti intertext.
