Collective electron effects in argon ion orientation from helium ion-argon collisions

Abstract

The excited states $\rm Ar\sp+(3p\sp4\lbrack\sp1D\rbrack\ 4p\sp{\prime}, \sp2F\sbsp{7/2,5/2}{\circ}$) were formed in a charge transfer and excitation process involving He$\sp+$ and Ar. The alignment and orientation of these states were measured by conducting a coincidence experiment between the emitted radiation and the scattered neutral He particle. These measurements were conducted for He$\sp+$ collision energies of.675 keV, 1 keV, and 2 keV and He scattering angles ranging from.94$\sp\circ$ to 3.76$\sp\circ$. The results of this experiment are discussed in terms of the propensity rule for colliding diatom systems. Utilizing the state multipole formalism as an alternate means of representing the alignment and orientation data, a method is presented which decouples the orbital angular momentum and spin angular momentum components of these parameters. Through the determination of the spin angular momentum component, the spin-orbit interaction as a function of collision energy and impact parameter is discussed. The decoupling technique is extended in an attempt to disentangle the core angular momentum, outer electron angular momentum, and spin angular momentum contributions of the resulting alignment and orientation measurements. Preliminary measurements of the $\rm Ar\sp+(3p\sp4 \lbrack\sp1D\rbrack\ 4p\sp{\prime}, \sp2P\sbsp{3/2,1/2}{\circ})$ excited states are also examined using the same measurement and decoupling methods.
