Latin American wind chamber music for oboe: An annotated bibliography
Abstract
Some years ago the author was faced with the challenge of presenting a program of Latin American music for wind quintet. Cursory research at that time revealed a surprisingly large body of works of which only the Villa-Lobos Quintette en forme de choros is apparently within the standard repertory for that ensemble. Curiosity about the full extent and nature of Latin American chamber music for the oboe led to this survey. This study is limited to published compositions. A total of 82 compositions by 54 composers from nearly every Latin American country was examined in detail. While much of the information was gleaned from the music itself, this is not intended as an analytical treatise. Rather, a special emphasis has been placed on the performance history and critical review of each work. An attempt was also made to contact each composer as well as certain important performers. With the present study it is intended that those interested in Latin American chamber music mainly for wind instruments will have an extensive source of information. To that end, the paper is organized into three chapters and numerous appendices. The first chapter is a brief overview of the development of art music in Latin America from colonial times to the present day. While not altogether necessary for the study or performance of a given composition, this chapter may prove valuable in providing a broader sense of perspective about a composition, its composer or his country. The second chapter is the annotated bibliography of Latin American chamber music for the oboe. It is organized by size of ensemble, from duets to sextets and larger ensembles. The third chapter is devoted to the biographies of the composers whose music is detailed in this paper. The appendices which follow the last chapter focus on issues that either fall outside of the principal area of investigation, provide meaningful comparative analysis or offer important points of departure for additional study.
