Thinking about drinking: The role of general and sex-specific alcohol expectancies among sexual offenders

Lisa Madsen Jones, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The relationship between general and sex-specific alcohol expectancies and drinking before offending were examined in a sample of 182 incarcerated males; 69 were sexual offenders, 98 were general offenders (e.g., larceny, robbery, murder), and 15 were dual offenders (i.e., offenders who committed both sexual and general offenses). Subjects completed self-report packages at an initial testing session and seven months subsequent to the initial testing. One purpose of the study was to develop a sex-specific alcohol expectancy questionnaire to be used with sexual offenders. Four dominant expectancy/factors were extracted from the Measure of Expectancies Specific to Sex and Alcohol (MESA). These factors were labeled sexual enhancement, sexual disinhibition, sexual riskiness, and sexual deviancy. Sexual offenders who drank prior to offending ($N = 31$, 44.1%) were found to hold differential general and sex-specific expectancies about the effects of alcohol when compared to those sexual offenders who did not drink prior to offending ($N = 35$, 55.9%). A hierarchial stepwise logistic regression analysis revealed unique predictive utility for sex-specific expectancies and pre-incarceration customary drinking. These two variables predicted approximately 84% of the variance of whether or not an offender drank prior to sexually offending. Theoretically, the results highlight the importance of assessing expectancies related to particular social domains. Implications for sexual offender treatment and relapse prevention are discussed.
