Nitric acid oxidation of galactose and other sugars

Robert B Angier, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The oxidation of sugars with nitric acid has long been employed as a standard method for the identification and determination of structure in the carbohydrate group. Usually the reaction is considered to be a biterminal oxidation of the sugar to a dicarboxylic acid. Of the applications of this reaction, the oxidation of galactose (I) to mucio acid (II) is the classic example.
