Abstract

The University of Nebraska Public Policy Center’s Policy Scholars Program is a 14-week program aimed at providing undergraduate students with a paid experiential learning opportunity focused on public policy analysis and research. Accepted students, also referred to as cohort members, would have an opportunity to experience various aspects of policy research and evaluation, one-on-one mentorship, and offer training sessions in professional development and career or graduate/professional school readiness. This program was also analyzed with respect to experiential learning and how experiential learning opportunities can promote educational equity in higher academia. The included lesson plans are a product of concepts discussed in the paper portion to provide students with intentional and impactful opportunities to grow both professionally and personally. The lessons and materials also serve as a blueprint for those who may want to implement similar programs in their respective organizations and are aimed to be accessible with the assumption that the organization has the necessary background knowledge.
