Abstract

In community development projects, the participation and autonomy of the community members is vital for the success and sustainability of the project. This project explored the levels of community involvement in projects run by student chapters in Engineers Without Borders (EWB). A Qualtrics survey was used to gather information about student chapters’ projects, their opinions regarding the performance of their projects, their relationships and interactions with their project partner communities, and the challenges and impacts they found while traveling for their projects. The results of the survey were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. It was concluded that while a community-driven approach to projects is important to EWB student volunteers, a training program through EWB to encourage increased community participation in projects would be beneficial for student chapters working to make their projects more community-driven.
