Abstract
The 2024–2025 Distribution Management Systems, Inc. (DMSi) Design Studio team developed a data-driven dashboard solution to improve demand forecasting and inventory purchasing for DMSi customers. The project aimed to replace manual, error-prone, complex forecasting methods with a machine learning-powered system that integrates real-time analytics and predictive modeling. Utilizing a CatBoost regression model, the team accurately predicted item-level demand and applied Demand-Driven Material Requirements Planning (DDMRP) to generate optimized purchasing recommendations. These insights were delivered through an interactive dashboard, offering users intuitive visualizations and actionable inventory data.
Our vision statement for the project was as follows:
“Develop a data-driven inventory optimization tool that forecasts demand and streamlines purchasing, empowering DMSi customers to maximize profitability and improve satisfaction through optimal inventory management.”
This statement stayed consistent with the team's goals for the years for this project.
