Developing a Reading Habit in Children: Lagos State Library Board Summer Reading Programme Experience

Abstract

The paper discusses importance of reading in education and total development of children. The public library system has a crucial role to play in stimulating reading interest in Nigerian children, by organizing activities that will encourage children to read and use the library. It relates the experience of Lagos State Library Board in organizing summer reading programmes in the most cosmopolitan state in Nigeria. Successes, benefits, and challenges faced in this effort are highlighted and recommendations offered.
