Abstract

The study examined undergraduate students’ satisfaction with current awareness and orientation services in university libraries in Benue State. Two specific objectives with corresponding research questions guided the study and two hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study was 4,411 library registered 400 level students in Universities in Benue State. The sample size of 367 registered library undergraduate students was used for the study. The sample was selected using proportionate stratified and simple random sampling techniques. The instrument for data collection was a self-developed structured questionnaire titled “Undergraduate Satisfaction with Current Awareness and Orientation Services Questionnaire” (USCAOSQ). The questionnaire was validated by three experts. The reliability of the questionnaire was established using Cronbach Alpha method and a reliability coefficient of 0.81 was obtained. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics of Mean and Standard Deviation to answer the research questions and a non parametric statistic of Chi-square to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that the level of satisfaction derived by undergraduate students with current awareness and orientation services offered by University Libraries in Benue State was not significant. The study concluded that undergraduate students' satisfaction with current awareness and orientation services in university libraries in Benue State is not significant, highlighting the need for substantial improvements in service quality and orientation programs. Recommendations were made that university libraries should focus on improving the quality of their current awareness services by ensuring that students have easy access to updated information through various channels such as newsletters, email alerts, and social media and it is essential for university libraries to review and update the orientation programs offered to new students and provide clear and comprehensive guidance on how to navigate the library's resources and services
