Abstract
Livestock cooperative societies play an important role in disseminating information related to livestock production practices to farmers in Northwest Nigeria. These societies aim to support farmers by sharing knowledge that can help strengthen animal husbandry techniques, improve productivity, and increase farm incomes. Through organized events, training programs, and distribution of educational materials, the livestock cooperatives in the region seek to provide farmers with the latest research-based information on topics like animal breeding, feeding, disease prevention, and market access. The objective of this study is to assess the types of information services provided by livestock cooperative societies to address the information needs of farmers and to determine the channels used by to communicate information with farmers in Northwest Nigeria. Quantitative research methodology and survey design was adopted for the research. Questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. The population of the study comprises all the livestock farmers from the cooperative societies in Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto and Zamfara State from Northwest Nigeria respectively. The subject of the study was drawn using cluster sampling technique. The study discovers almost similar response across the farmers on the objectives of the study. It was therefore recommended that cooperative societies in the Northwest Nigeria should establish, anchor and facilitate the use of a strong online presence such as text, email alerts, social media etc. in order to connect with members in the digital age. This will no doubt be the fastest way to reach the larger farmers and help to make informed decisions about production and sale.
