Abstract

Abstract

Preservation of information resources is a very crucial activity which is carried out by libraries in Nigeria using various methods to prolong information resources lifespan. University libraries in Nigeria see the need to adopt Electronic Security System (ESS) for different purposes but mostly for the security of information resources and to make users have access to the information they need. The study therefore, investigated the use of ESS in the preservation of information resources in Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Descriptive research design was adopted and the population of the study comprised 81 professionals, para-professionals and technical staff of the library. The entire population of 81 staff was enumerated. Collection of data was achieved by employing a questionnaire, and was analyzed with statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). The findings showed that CCTV (97.8%), security gates (87.7%), Internet protocol (IP) surveillance system (79.04) are the most commonly employed ESS devices for preservation. The results also showed that the extent of use of ESS was high (overall mean=21) as against the threshold of 30. The major challenges hindering the effective use of ESS were inadequate funding, poor maintenance, and high cost of installing ESS. It was recommended that enough budgetary resources should be allocated for the purchase and maintenance of ESS devices in the library.
